In defense of Pride

Granted, it’s often used as a negative. Making up part of the 7 deadly sins in Christianity and just getting an all-around bad rep among most religions. Even folk tales rarely look kindly on it. It’s always about modesty and humility – but are they really at odds?

I for one always thought pride is a way to acknowledge when you do something right or well. When you know you’re worth more than what some may offer and a way to uphold a certain standard. The line of standards you draw, I believe, comes from the emotion that is pride. You observe, you process, you understand and you internalise this.

This doesn’t mean that you’re suddenly too good for Happy Meals at McDonald’s or being rude to waiters because your pay is great – that’s what the word ‘obnoxious’ (or prick) is for. It’s really when you are presented with something and you know from experience and knowledge, that this is sub-par. A president had to believe he/she was worthy of being so at some point right?

I take pride in successes and even failures when looked upon in retrospection. Pride for carving a way out when there was none. Daring decisions at times and risks that paid off.

Pride can be felt for another too. Whether it’s your kid, your friend or even your parents – don’t you feel a sense of pride even when you look upon them as a whole existence, not just when they accomplish something?

It has a place. Pride, at the right level, is almost appreciative-adjacent. When you negotiate a salary or something similar, it’s well-placed. When someone is taking you cheap restaurant and you decide it’s subpar – you’re a snob.
